SEVEN ON SET is a twice-monthly interview series that takes a closer look at creative individuals. In this installation, we interviewed Canadian-born, LA-based director and editor, Rosanna Peng.

1. What made you want to become a director/editor?

In high school, I was a shy girl with severe acne. I was very creative and I felt like a funny person, but would never have the courage to share my ideas out-loud. I took a video class with a bunch of jocks and remember the first time I was able to make my whole class laugh with a video I had made. Video and editing naturally became the medium in which I could express myself.

2. What has been the most memorable moment of your career?

Probably seeing my name plate you guys (ROOT) put outside of the room I shot with J.Crew. Mostly everything I do lives online. Seeing my name physically labeled and recognized for one of my favorite projects meant a lot. So thank you!

3. If you did something different for a living, what would it be?

I would be working in the health and fitness industry. It would be so fulfilling to physically and tangibly help people through health and fitness. Sometimes I’m editing for days straight so I’m often fantasizing of a life completely away from the screen. Being able to work with my hands (visual art, physical activity, etc) would be super appealing in a different life.

4. What is your personal mantra?

Be blessed. It’s kind of a passive mantra to follow, but it’s the idea of positioning yourself with your palms open and ready to receive all da blessings. Every situation can potentially be a blessing/learning opportunity if your cup is ready and half full.

5. What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

I get to know people through a curated list of ‘would you rather’ questions.

6. Ideal Dinner party? Dead or Alive.

Casey Neistat, Quentin Tarantino, Tim Burton, Rihanna, Jesus.

7. If you could only choose one song to play every time you walked into a room for the rest of your life, what would it be?

‘Rollout” by Ludacris. Even though I’d technically be rolling into that room..I guess I’m rolling out of the previous room into the next. I don’t know.
